5-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga Dunes

Today we will depart Marrakech early, ideally by 8am, in your private air-conditioned vehicle, heading south toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs steadily via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 metres, winding through a long series of switchbacks with sweeping views over terraced Berber villages, almond groves, and colourful mineral-rich rock formations — your driver will stop at several viewpoints along the way, and roadside stalls sell local geodes and amethyst. After descending the far side of the pass, we reach Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar above the Ounila River and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world, its dramatic silhouette having appeared in films including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. We take a guided walk up through the narrow lanes to the old communal granary at the top for panoramic views over the valley. A short drive brings us to Ouarzazate, nicknamed the 'Hollywood of Africa' thanks to the Atlas Film Studios, where time permitting we visit the Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the powerful Glaoui family. In the late afternoon, we continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, also known as the Valley of Roses, checking in to a traditional kasbah-style hotel with terrace views over the dramatic folded rock formations for a relaxed dinner as the sun sets. Lunch en route is typically taken near Ait Ben Haddou or in Ouarzazate, a welcome midday break on this long but spectacular crossing day.

After breakfast overlooking the valley, we continue east toward Todra Gorge, one of Morocco's most dramatic natural landmarks, where sheer pink and orange limestone cliffs rise up to 300 metres on either side of a narrow canyon, in places barely 10 metres wide. We stop for an hour or so for a short walk along the canyon floor and photographs of the towering walls, a popular spot for rock climbers from around the world. After lunch nearby, often on a terrace overlooking a palm oasis, we continue south toward Merzouga, arriving on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea in the late afternoon. Here, camel handlers meet us for the final leg of the day's journey — mounting your camel for a genuinely unforgettable sunset trek across the dunes, the changing colours of the sand as the sun drops toward the horizon are difficult to describe and impossible to forget. After roughly 45-60 minutes of gentle camel trekking, we arrive at our exclusive desert camp, nestled among some of the highest dunes in Morocco, reaching over 150 metres. Settle into your comfortable Berber tent, enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and later, gather around the campfire as local Berber musicians play traditional drums under one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth.

For those willing to wake before dawn, this morning offers one of the most memorable experiences of the trip: climbing a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise over the Sahara, as the desert changes colour by the minute from soft pink to deep gold. Afterwards, return to camp for a simple Berber breakfast of flatbread, honey, and sweet mint tea before saying goodbye to your camel guides and driving back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver will be waiting. Today is largely a return journey, retracing the route back through Tinghir and Ouarzazate, though your driver will typically vary the pace and stops based on your preference — some guests prefer to stop again briefly at Todra Gorge or the Dades Valley viewpoints, while others prefer to press on toward Marrakech at a steadier pace. We cross the High Atlas once more via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the afternoon, with the palm groves surrounding Marrakech coming into view as the road descends. We arrive back in Marrakech in the early evening and check in to your riad, with dinner and the rest of the evening free — many guests choose to head toward Jemaa el-Fna square for a lively first proper evening in the Red City.

After three days of desert adventure, today is yours to explore Marrakech at your own pace, or we can arrange a local guide for a half or full day of sightseeing on request. Popular highlights include the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century masterpiece with elaborately carved cedar ceilings and tranquil courtyards; the Saadian Tombs, a royal necropolis rediscovered in 1917 after lying sealed for nearly 300 years; and the Jardin Majorelle, a stunning cobalt-blue botanical garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent. The souks — Marrakech's sprawling network of covered markets organised by trade — are also well worth an unhurried visit for leather goods, lanterns, spices, and Berber carpets, with plenty of opportunity to practise the expected art of bargaining. Many guests also choose to unwind with a traditional hammam and argan oil massage at a spa within their riad, a well-earned rest after the desert crossing. As evening falls, Jemaa el-Fna square transforms with food stalls, storytellers, and musicians — a wonderful, lively place to enjoy your final dinner in Morocco, surrounded by the sounds and smells that make the square a UNESCO-recognised 'Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity'. Our journey together comes to an end this morning. Depending on your flight time, you will have a final opportunity to enjoy breakfast on your riad's rooftop terrace, take a last unhurried walk through the medina, or pick up any remaining gifts — argan oil, saffron, ras el hanout spice blends, or handmade leather goods make excellent, easily packable souvenirs. If your schedule allows, your driver can suggest a final stop, such as the Menara Gardens on the western edge of the city, a peaceful 12th-century olive grove and reflecting pool with the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains as a backdrop.
